Phase 1: Expanding our Coalition’s Knowledge of the CDC’s Technical Package for Preventing Suicide

Overview

The goal of Phase 1 is to expand the coalition’s knowledge of the CDC’s Technical Package for Preventing Suicide. This process will occur in two steps:
(1) A small group of coalition members will engage in a deep dive into the CDC’s Technical Package for Preventing Suicide.
(2) The small group will then create a plan to share the knowledge they have gained with the entire coalition.

Making the Ask

Asking for help is difficult, whether it involves fundraising, assistance on a project, advice, or simply a favor. In this video, Judy Millesen offers tips on how to ask anyone for anything. Judy also provides a number resources to complement this learning on how to strengthen fundraising efforts, why it is hard to ask, how to make asking easier, how asking can make you stronger, and a TedTalk on “The Art of Asking.”

  • What is Consensus Decision Making?

This video is an introduction to consensus decision making. It explains that consensus decision making is a process where everybody who is affected by a decision gets to have their say and solutions are found that everyone can support. Other benefits are that people feel listened to, valued and empowered, and the process results in creative solutions that all group members are committed to.

  • How to do Consensus Decision Making
This video shows a suggested process for consensus decision making. By following this procedure, you may find creative solutions acceptable to everyone. Part of this method is looking at different ways of agreeing and disagreeing so a facilitator can assess how much agreement there is for a proposal.

  • How to Make Consensus Genuinely Democratic

This video looks at the attitudes and behaviors needed for effective and inclusive consensus decision making. It also raises the issue of power dynamics, as this needs to be addressed if consensus decision making is to be genuinely democratic.
